Camp Waitawheta 2013

We came, we saw, we conquered!!  What a great 4 days.  So great, in fact, that I'm at home, still nursing my laringitis.
I am so proud of my class for the respect they showed, their courage they developed and their inquisitive minds.  I hope that you all went home having learnt something and feeling proud of your achievements.

Day one saw us partake in the biggest hike most of these kids had ever done.  We crossed rivers, hiked up and down mountians, watched waterfalls, swam in ice cold water and saw old as Kauri trees.  Once back at camp we settled in to our evening routine of showers, dinner, writing and singing.  To end our night, we had to find the parents in a game of spotlight.  Mr Hamley and Robbo were really good at hiding.

Day two was a lot less strenuous.  We bused into Waihi Town and visited Martha Open Cast Mine, the Education Centre and the Information Centre.  It was really interesting to see and hear about the current gold mining process.  After lunch, Ian took us through the Museum - the chopped off thumbs being a highlight, then it was straight down to Bowentown Beach estuary for swimming, kayaking and playing in the sand.  Once our evening routine was completed, the parents organised a truely terrifying Burma Trail that had all the kids screaming for the hills.

Day three started off with two walks through the Karangahake Gorge.  Mrs Mclean took us up to the Windows walk and we got to experience the dark, dusty, cramped tunnels where the old miners used to work.  Then down to the Tunnel Walk where we walked through a very long, dark tunnel without torches.  Where was halfway??!!  How did you know??!!  Then it was lunch time and once again, off to Bowentown Beach for another afternoon of fun in the sun, at the beach.   To end our afternoon, we took the plunge and stepped off the bridge.  Also, well done to those of you who put a skit together for our camp concert.

Day Four - time for the big clean up of dorms and lost property.  A quick bus trip to the ruins of the Victoria Battery for some exploring and photos.  Finally, we stopped in at Matamata pools for a sausage sizzle and dip in the pool.  Then it was home, into the arms of waiting parents.

Harlem Shake

Never one to stand in the way of a bit of fun - we made this video last week.  The Harlem Shake is all the rage at the moment on YouTube.  I've just posted our version on our blog...

Finally back online

So much for blogging once a week - I really need to write down the log in name and password for this site!  There are so many different ones to remember - one negative for the technology we use today.  Facebook, yahoo, email, blogs, twitter, smallworlds, etc etc.

Anywho, Room 18 has been busy with all sorts of exciting things...  preparing for camp with walks/runs around school, watching our class caterpillars morph into beautiful butterflies and continue to learn how to interact with each other.

Monarch Butterflies
Here we are observing the eggs on a leaf, the caterpillars eating and a butterfly whose wings hadn't fully developed.  We were then able to watch those caterpillars turn into a chrysalis and now they are hatching into beautiful butterflies - so far one female and one male, with one left to hatch.

Learning to predict and infer through videos

Our youtube video for the week - a little bit funny, a little bit gross.  What can you see...?  What can you hear...?
We predicted and inferred what happened before and after the event from clues in the clip - it was swimming, it had just eaten, it slowly continued to walk, the people smelt something really bad.
If the hippo hadn't come out of the water there would have been heaps of brown bubbles.

This is what we decided our room was all about.  These things are important to all of us.

Welcome to Room 18 2013

Tena Koutou Katoa!
Welcome to the Blog of Mrs Ingram and Room 18.
We're 3 days into the school year and things are going great.
The class has 28 (so far) awesome kids - 17 boys and 11 girls.
This week we're all about getting to know each other.  What makes us tick and keeps us going?  Who has the biggest feet and the widest hand spans?
We've also been looking at setting goals for ourselves for the year and for our lives.  I have some aspiring nurses, police people and drift car drivers floating around.  To get there though, they've decided they want to get better at maths, use their manners and try to keep their desks tidy.  Some very realistic goals.  Lets reach for the stars - and hope we find Mars!!!
